10 Nutrition Tips to beat the summer heat
Summers are a tough part to deal with! To stay Healthy and hydrated during this season do follow these beneficial tips.
Summer is the season to make water more interesting! Add lemon, mint, cucumber, your choice of fruit or spices like ginger, fennel, and even turmeric. Mix and match the ingredients, find a flavor that you like and stick to it. This way, the water looks super colorful, tastes great, makes the body alkaline and helps manage the summer heat.
- CUT OUT SODAS/ COLAS/ SPARKLING WATER:
The common mistake that we make in the summers is to grab a can of soda or cola to beat the heat. The carbonated waters get converted to carbonic acid in the body which is very acidic. The best option to go for when very thirsty is a glass of lemon infused water or coconut water which efficiently quenches thirst and also makes the body highly alkaline.
- TRADITIONAL DRINKS:
Summer drinks that are traditionally made in the homes in the different parts of the world are really effective in beating the summer heat. In India, drinks like aam panna made from mango, sugar cane juice, sol khadi, lemon sherbets, nannari rooti sherbets, kokum drinks, tamarind sherbets, jaggery concoction, vetiver root sherbet and many more are really effective in cooling the body and preparing it to counter the summer heat.
- LIMIT COFFE/TEA/ALCOHOL
During summers, it’s best to keep away from coffees, teas, and alcohol as much as we can as they are highly acidic and dehydrating. Going for traditional drinks or herbal teas helps a lot and contributes to an alkaline pH and cooler body.
- ALKALINE DIET
Include as much alkaline diet in your daily routines as you can which would mean lots of vegetables, herbs, and spices as it helps in cooling the body, making the body alkaline and helps in easy digestion as well.
- LIGHT MEALS
Taking care of the meals – the oil content, the type of cooking method used, the overall portion sizes, all of these plays an important role in how we feel and look, especially during the summers. It makes a big difference when we go for foods that are fresh, have less oil content and those that are steamed/roasted or baked rather than fried. After a good Detox, you should follow the proper diet plan to maintain the results. Choose from various detox retreats that suit your body.
- VITAMIN C
Include foods that contain as much Vitamin C as possible as it helps in protecting the skin from the harmful UV rays. And Vitamin C is a good anti-oxidant, helps with immunity and prevents various infections. It is also a water-soluble vitamin so more focus should be on drinking water as well.
Snack on fruit as much as you can as they are high in fiber, water content and the essential Vitamins and minerals that are usually lost through sweating during the summers.
Herbs are highly alkaline, easy to grow even in a cup or saucer over the kitchen counter and highly effective in maintaining the body temperature by helping the body to cool down and hence, add them to all the meals/smoothies of the day as much as possible this summer.
Add foods that have good probiotics like Curd, unsweetened yogurt, idli, dosa, kefir as they help in maintaining good digestion, promote good gut health and cools down the body.
